Every year, University Medical Center at Brackenridge, sees a fairly high number of spinal cord injuries – approximately 100 to 125. Now, people with spinal cord injuries have access to a new Brain & Spine Recovery Center. Staffed by physical therapists, occupational therapists and certified trainers, the Center includes three key components—a fitness gym, a second-phase of rehabilitation and an advanced recovery program:

  • The fitness gym is open evening and weekends, providing equipment specifically for the spinal cord population.
  • The second-phase of rehabilitation offers the advanced skills necessary for a higher quality of life and improved functionality. It is an outpatient program and includes uneven transfers, difficult terrain, floor to chair transfers, “wheelie” skills for stairs, curbs, orthotics/splints, spasticity management, neuro re-education, assisted gait, standing readiness, pain management, sensory stimulation/retraining, and continuation of bowel and bladder retraining programs.
  • The Advanced Recovery Program offers a very intense exercise and neuromuscular retraining program to allow maximal increase in function.

Previously there has not been a designated facility for people with spinal cord injuries where they had access to exercise equipment, social interaction and participation in research.
